Description:
A major source of geographic and cartographic information, the Map
Collection contains well over 150,000 sheet maps and thousands of thematic and
national atlases, making it the second largest map collection in a public library
in the United States.
Although
the collection is universal in content, there is much emphasis on maps of Detroit
and Michigan. Included in the Map Collection are world maps, satellite-imagery
maps, maps of virtually every country and area of the earth, maps of most Michigan
lakes and Sanborn fire insurance maps for Detroit and other Michigan cities.
Materials
and Technology
Many
U.S. government maps find their way into the Map Collection via the government
depository program. Included in the program are navigation charts, national forest
maps, Central Intelligence Agency area and country maps and the massive 57,000
sheet topographic series of the United States, published by the U.S. Geological
Survey. This series is in much demand because of its large scale and detailed
coverage.
The
Map Collection also features special collections of topographic maps covering
many European countries including the 1871 German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. Detailed topographic map coverage extends to the New World with collections
of Mexican and Canadian maps and various South American countries.
Many
ancillary tools, such as globes, gazetteers, indexes, teaching aids and software
programs, are also available aid library users in their search for geographic
information.
