Services for the blind, the visually handicapped, the physically handicapped, or reading disabled.
The Detroit Subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped provides services, in accordance with the guidelines established by the U.S. Library of Congress National Library Service (NLS) [2], to those who cannot read conventional print material, including persons who are blind, visually handicapped, physically handicapped, or reading disabled. Applications are available online at the NLS website or directly from Detroit LBPH. Please call or e-mail if you need assistance with the application. The LBPH collection is primarily a leisure collection of audio books which includes adult and juvenile, fiction and non fiction, bestsellers, mysteries, romances, Westerns, biographies and African American history. It offers Books on Tape, Digital Books, Large Print books, Descriptive Videos, regular print books about disabilities, and reference sources on the ADA. LBPH offers many events and activities for its users including two monthly Book Clubs, a monthly knitting group, computer training, author talks and special programs. Talking Books, along with talking book machines, are available to eligible residents who live in a 14 ZIP code area of Detroit and Highland Park. Loans of the books and machines are made to individuals and to institutions such as schools, nursing homes and senior residences. Over 60,000 book titles are available (many in Spanish) as well as some magazines including Ebony, Good Housekeeping and Sports Illustrated. Sheet music in Large Print and Braille and recorded music instruction are available through the NLS office in Washington D.C. All materials can be provided through the mail Free Matter for the Blind. There is no cost for the customer.
