Our literacy program provides unique learning opportunities to Detroit adults who desire to learn to read, write, or improve their reading and comprehension skills. One-to-one goal-focused tutoring sessions are available for continued educational growth. The program is free and open to persons 18 years of age or older

Become a Volunteer Tutor at the Detroit Public Library
The Detroit Public Library's Literacy Program needs tutor volunteers for weekly two-hour sessions to help adults improve their reading skills. All tutoring sessions are held at the Detroit Public Library. To become a tutor for the Detroit Public Library, you must attend one of our free 15-hour tutor trainings.
Books and Resources for New Adult Readers
Books to build vocabulary, improve spelling and grammar, and increase reading comprehension. Books for life skills and leisure reading with basic vocabulary are available for checkout.

Parking Information
Metered street parking on Cass, Woodward, Putnam and Kirby Avenues. Free parking in the lot on the south side of the Main Library, all day on Saturdays and from 6-8 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Lot is accessible from Putnam Avenue via Cass Avenue. Customers must then use either the Cass or the Woodward entrance.
Transportation
The DDOT Woodward Avenue bus stops at Woodward and Kirby. The DDOT Dexter bus stops in front of the Cass entrance. The DDOT Crosstown bus stops on Warren Avenue between Woodward and Cass, one block north of the Main Library.
