2014 African American Booklist
The Detroit Public Library, encouraged by the positive response to this annual publication, continues the tradition of the African American Booklist for 2014 and beyond. This bibliography provides a selected list of books by and/or about African Americans. This booklist includes works of fiction and nonfiction for adults, children and young adults reviewed and recommended by librarians of the Detroit Public Library.
The African American Booklist began as a way to commemorate Black History Month and since that time has continued to feature the accomplishments of African Americans in the literary world. The booklist is an annual tradition in our community and continues to be a highly anticipated publication for book lovers nationwide.
This year, the African American Booklist honors one of the library’s signature events – the E. Azalia Hackley Concert. Celebrating its 70th Anniversary, the Hackley Concert has been a yearly tradition in the month of February and this year’s concert may be one of the best yet. The 2014 E. Azalia Hackley Concert honors the legacy of Roland Hayes with a special composition by Patrice Rushen, performed by George Shirley and the Cut Time Players. To date, the work has never been performed until this year’s concert.
The 2014 African American Booklist salutes the E. Azalia Hackley Collection’s concerts for 70 great years as a Detroit musical tradition.
